Shantivanam Ashram was founded in 1995 by Rev. Fr. Thomas Elipulikkat. The 15-acre plot of barren land given to him by the local Panchayat of Rama village in Nagpur District for setting up an Ashram was transformed into a ‘Shantivanam’ (‘forest of peace’) with a large number of fruit-bearing trees and perennial water sources by Rev. Fr. Thomas within a period 16 years by his own dedicated hard work. Unable to find a successor to carry forward the activities of the Ashram, the 70 years old Rev. Fr. Thomas decided to hand over the Ashram to NIT. NIT’s resolve to transform the Shantivanam Ashram into the first National Center to promote the much-needed communal harmony and inter-religious cooperation in the country is doubly strengthened after the unprecedented communal violence witnessed in the Muzaffarnagar and nearby districts during September 2013.
Every Shantivanam will have ‘Navasrushti Ashram’ as its soul and center. Meditation Cottages (‘Dhyana Kutirs’) for all religions with inspiring quotes from their Scriptures and saints will also be established in every Shantivanam in order to promote inter-religious understanding and communal harmony. There will also be a common Meditation Hall for promoting the ‘Inner Peace Meditation’ (also known as ‘Shanti Yagna’ Meditation) developed by Swamiji for inner peace through the Christ-Spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation. Shantivanam will also serve as the National Training & Coordinating Center for the Second Freedom Struggle of India that is being promoted by Dharma Bharathi Mission and for the Tyagarchana Shanti Mission that will be promoted by Dharma Rajya Vedi.
